Memorial Day

Putting some politics aside, we must remember what Memorial Day is about. Regardless of who you are, chances are you have been affected by the military and what it provides, in a positive manner. The fact that you are reading this today is a direct result of our military and the protections it provides. Some may say, “well the military is just a pawn, that the president uses to further his own agenda.” You may not know that all military personnel take an oath, and it is not solely to the president. Most notably the highest promise in the oath is to the Constitution of the United States, you know that silly little dirt rag that gives you the rights that you actually do have and allows you to read this article. They are sworn to “uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.” That would mean that it is their job to disobey any order, even from the president, that violates the constitution.

We as a society have a responsibility to stay involved so that that never has to happen, but rest assured, when push comes to shove, the military will be there. They don’t take their oath lightly. How can they, they have pledged to give up their life for it. And many have.

That is what Memorial Day is all about, remembering those who have given their life so that you may live yours freely. Remember the now almost gone generations that have kept us from having to speak German (WWI, and WWII). Remember those who tried to resist communism and keep people free, even though the politicians couldn’t decide what to do(Korea, and Vietnam). Remember those who continue to resist tyranny, and terrorism through out the world, allowing those of us who are still here to fight over the best method, and who lied about who (GWI, The Balkans, GWOT, GWII).

Never forget the sole reasons we remain, with all of our faults, the greatest country in the world, the American Soldiers, Sailors, marines, and Airmen, working around the world, both home and abroad, taking the fight to the oppressors, and not letting the fight come back home.

And I ask, that you also remember that they are human, which means they feel, think, and make mistakes. When the media maligns them, remember that they get CNN too, when they have a break, that is what they can watch, and every protest, every baby killer statement, every “this war is wrong and the blood is on your hands and every small bicker over partisan politics that makes the international news, affects them.

So does every “At’ta boy”, every “Your doing a great job”, every “we love you, and were proud of you”, every “get the jobs done and come home safe”, and every other word of support also affects them. The more supported they feel, the better they work, and the less of them we loose. So please remember that this weekend as you drive down the interstate without hitting a “checkpoint”, when you set up camp in your local public campgrounds, and when you bite into your BBQ, and slurp from your beverages under a free sky. Remember. Remember.
